Top 10 Contemporary / Required Pairings or...

Top 10 Contemporary Books That Would Be Great
Paired With A Required Reading Book
OR Top Ten Books That You Wish Were Taught In Schools
(Feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish)

Finally schools are introducing contemporary titles into the curriculum!  Don't get me wrong.  I think everyone should take the time to read To Kill A Mockingbird and 1984, but there are so many exceptional stories being published for tweens and teens that deserve some time.  A local school district assigned James Dashner's The Maze Runner series for an honor's class this summer, and by golly, the teens came back in time after time wanting something similiar to read.  Making reading fun and current might just be the key to encouraging life long readers.

So I split the list...5 contemporary/required pairings (because I love modern retellings) and 5 books I hope make it into the curriculum (or at least book talked in the classroom).

1) For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund/
Persuasion by Jane Austen

2) Looking for Alaska by John Green/
A Separate Peace by John Knowles

3) Going Bovine by Libba Bray/
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes

 4) Splintered by A.G. Howard/
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

5)  Cupid by Julius Lester/
(The story of Cupid)

6) Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys

7) Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

8) Unwind by Neal Shusterman

9) The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

10) I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

  1. This is such a great list! I love your pairings (and any reason to read Jane Austen in school gets an A+ from me)

On a side note, I'm not sure your link at The Broke and Bookish is working, you might want to check it and make sure it's just my computer being weird. I ended up googling you as I liked your blog name so much!
